Home of Hattie Branch

6 Atlantic Street

Hattie Branch (1898-1995) lived the life of a representative African-American woman. Born in Virginia, where she worked as a midwife, Hattie Branch came to Maine in the 1950s to start a chicken farm with her brother. She later moved to Portland and worked at Union Station and as a housekeeper. She was a self-sufficient woman who acquired income property and was famous for her homemade and homegrown Southern-style foods and her skill as a seamstress.
